Foreign Material Contamination: It Happens to the Best of Us

Thankfully, the United States of America has one of the safest and best food supplies in the world.

Thousands of companies harvest, prepare and deliver foods of every shape, size and flavor to families across the country. We are thankful for that every day — from birthday cakes to breakfast cereals to Thanksgiving dinner.

A lot of work goes into preparing and delivering food to consumers — and in that process, physical contaminants or foreign material get into the food while it is being prepared. It happens to even the best of companies from time to time.

Whether you’re a plant manager, quality control manager, operations manager or food safety supervisor, a contamination from foreign materials is a huge risk for your brand and bottom line. Contamination can result in a damaged reputation and worse, a recall or lawsuit

When a foreign contaminant gets into the food supply, the company usually knows.  Whether it is a rubber washer, a piece of plastic, a few stones, a small part from a baking machine or some metal shavings from a conveyor belt — it’s no surprise when a company has to pull some product and inspect for physical contaminants.

The challenge is, a company that focuses all of its processes, equipment, and personnel on making food usually isn’t the most efficient at finding a foreign material that gets into the food only once in a blue moon.

That’s where FlexXray® comes in. No food company can find foreign contaminants like metal, wood, plastic, rubber, stone or glass as quickly and as effectively as FlexXray. It’s like FlexXray is made to find needles in haystacks!

Check out the photos below for some of the physical contaminants we have found and removed for food company customers recently.
